Our early years We started our cinema in Tansley Village Hall in January 2009, operating as a film club. We had members paying an annual subscription and guests paying at the door. We've always used a commercial screening licence, usually from Filmbank. This allows us to sell tickets at the door and to advertise widely. The club was immediately popular but after a few years membership reduced and some of our films were less well attended. In response, we decided to change from being a club with subscription-paying members to a fully ticketing cinema. Today Our programme comprises well-reviewed and well-rated films, usually under a year old. Before the Covid-19 pandemic that started in 2020, we invited our audiences and fans to vote for films from a substantial shortlist before we formed the annual programme. However, owing to limitations in the choice of films available to us we are choosing the films ourselves at present. All our seats must be booked in advance. We allocate and label them before the show taking account of each person's preference for seat location. Having booked their seats, people pay for them in cash at the door. How we operate Tansley Film is run entirely by volunteers on a not-for-profit basis by a management team and helpers. We are successful and financially sound. Our monetary surplus is used to add and to upgrade equipment and facilities, so that we can provide the best for our audiences. We enjoy what we do, all the more because our audiences frequently tell us how much they value and enjoy seeing films with us. |
